Here's a simplified ignition system wiring diagram of the 1992, 1993, 1994 4.0L Ford Explorer and 4.0L Ford Ranger. You'll find part two in the next page.

The ignition system, on these particular vehicles, is a Waste Spark System. Which in plain English means that two cylinders get spark at the exact same time.

The ignition coil assembly, with its 6 towers, is composed of 3 individual ignition coils. Each ignition coil fires spark to two cylinders simultaneously.

The 1990 Ford Ranger pickup truck is fitted with an ignition switch mounted against the steering column. The switch has wiring that attaches to the starter motor via a solenoid. When actuated, the switch directs the solenoid to send power to the starter motor. For this reason, a starting problem can sometimes be traced to a faulty ignition switch. I have a ranger boat with a 2004 225 mercury optimax. It only has about 75 hours. Lately when running 3500 to 4000 rpm the engine just quits like the kill switch is pulled. When I return the throttle read more.

I've written a tutorial that explains the on-car ignition coil test in a step-by-step manner. You can find it here:
