The ignition system, on these particular vehicles, is a Waste Spark System. Which in plain English means that two cylinders get spark at the exact same time.

The ignition coil assembly, with its 6 towers, is composed of 3 individual ignition coils. Each ignition coil fires spark to two cylinders simultaneously.
The 1990 Ford Ranger pickup truck is fitted with an ignition switch mounted against the steering column. The switch has wiring that attaches to the starter motor via a solenoid. When actuated, the switch directs the solenoid to send power to the starter motor. For this reason, a starting problem can sometimes be traced to a faulty ignition switch.
